History of Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu is one of the most famous underground cities in Cappadocia, Turkey. This ancient underground city was carved into the soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, around the 8th–7th centuries B.C. It was expanded over the centuries and provided a safe haven for various groups, including early Christians during the Byzantine era.

Derinkuyu could accommodate up to 20,000 people along with their livestock and food stores. It is an eleven-level city, reaching depths of approximately 85 meters. However, only a portion of it is open to the public today.

Derinkuyu Underground City opening hours are from 8 am to 7 pm in the summer and 8 am to 5 pm in the winter. Derinkuyu entrence fee in 2023 is 250TL.
